Bunkhouse has a reputation for building memorable hotel experiences that offer more than just a good night’s sleep. Passion for design, tireless attention to detail and a commitment to creating authentic culture have earned our properties a unique place in the hearts and minds of those who visit us. Our work is rooted in the communities in which we exist, and we believe above all else in creating a genuine awareness of and connection to a sense of place in all that we do.
Liz Lambert, Bunkhouse founder, first purchased a seedy motel on South Congress Avenue over 20 years ago, and transformed it into Hotel San José which has become known today as the quintessential “Austin” hotel. The success of Hotel San José, which sparked a revitalization in the city’s now thriving South Congress district, led her to launch Bunkhouse Group, a hospitality company founded on the pillars of design, music, and community-driven experiences.
Since then, Bunkhouse has expanded its unique hotel portfolio to include El Cosmico, the community-lodging concept in Marfa; the iconic Austin Motel, a renovated motor-court hotel, and Hotel Saint Cecilia, a 14-room secluded estate in Austin; Hotel Havana, the historic property on San Antonio’s River Walk; and most recently has added Bunkhouse's first international hotel, Hotel San Cristóbal Baja in Todos Santos, Mexico, and the first non-Texas property The Phoenix Hotel to their hotel portfolio. Bunkhouse also operates Jo’s Coffee, the popular Austin coffee shop, which currently includes three locations, and an east-side event space, Fair Market, also located in Austin. Bunkhouse’s fourth Austin hotel, the Hotel Magdalena, is currently in development and is slated to open on South Congress in 2020.
